Burning Spear is an act on the Starverb influence map. Their sound grew out of Larry Marshall, Leroy Sibbles, Sharon Forrester, Ziggy Marley and Coxsone Dodd. Those roots explain a lot about how Burning Spear arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Culture, Black Uhuru, Israel Vibration, Wailing Souls and The Abyssinians, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Rico Rodriguez, The Expanders, Freddie McKay, Postmen and Alpha Blondy, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 64 connections around Burning Spear, reaching back through Larry Marshall and forward to Rico Rodriguez. Follow any of those threads to keep travelling the influence between bands and genres on Starverb.
