◇ image via WikipediaThe Specials
The Specials is a Ska act. Their sound grew out of Chrissie Hynde, Coxsone Dodd, Bad Manners, Rico Rodriguez and The Pioneers. Those roots explain a lot about how The Specials arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as The Selecter, Bad Manners, Madness, Symarip and Toots and the Maytals, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Bowling for Soup, Smash Mouth, Gérald de Palmas, Fear of Music and The Go-Go's, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 71 connections around The Specials, reaching back through Chrissie Hynde and forward to Bowling for Soup.
