Solomon Burke is a Country and Gospel act. Their catalogue also touches House. Their sound grew out of The Blind Boys of Alabama, Mickey Baker, Mickey Newbury, Rick Hall and Bert Berns. Those roots explain a lot about how Solomon Burke arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Percy Sledge, Otis Redding, Clarence Carter, The Drifters and O.V. Wright, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Russell Simins, The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Tamiko Jones, Junkie XL and Freddie Scott, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 55 connections around Solomon Burke, reaching back through The Blind Boys of Alabama and forward to Russell Simins.
