Substantial

Substantial is an act on the Starverb influence map. Their sound grew out of DJ Kool Herc, Nujabes, Naughty By Nature, Lords of the Underground and OutKast. Those roots explain a lot about how Substantial arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Nujabes, Shing02, Cise Star, Five Deez and Kenichiro Nishihara, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Mega Ran, Nujabes, Marcus D, Burns and Pase Rock, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 45 connections around Substantial, reaching back through DJ Kool Herc and forward to Mega Ran. Follow any of those threads to keep travelling the influence between bands and genres on Starverb.
