Terry Reid

Terry Reid is an act on the Starverb influence map. Their sound grew out of Caetano Veloso, Otis Redding, Marvin Gaye and Gilberto Gil. Those roots explain a lot about how Terry Reid arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Faces, Free, Humble Pie, Buffalo Springfield and James Gang, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Mick Taylor, The Hollies, REO Speedwagon, John Mellencamp and Robert Plant, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 40 connections around Terry Reid, reaching back through Caetano Veloso and forward to Mick Taylor. Follow any of those threads to keep travelling the influence between bands and genres on Starverb.

Background

Terrance James Reid, who was nicknamed Superlungs, was an English musician, songwriter and guitarist, best known for his emotive style of singing in appearances with high-profile musicians as vocalist, supporting act and session musician. As a solo recording and touring artist he released six studio albums and four live albums. Described as an "artists' artist" by Rolling Stone, Reid was recognised by his contemporaries as an eminent talent in English rock music, both as a guitarist and a vocalist. Robert Plant praised his vocal "flexibility, power and control" and Graham Nash was quoted as saying he should have been "a gigantic star".
