The Box Tops

The Box Tops is an act on the Starverb influence map. Their sound grew out of Dan Penn, Jimi Jamison, James & Bobby Purify, Procol Harum and Reggie Young. Those roots explain a lot about how The Box Tops arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Paul Revere & The Raiders, The Young Rascals, The Grass Roots, The Tremeloes and Herman's Hermits, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Big Star, The Cramps, The Drifters, The Turtles and Three Dog Night, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 33 connections around The Box Tops, reaching back through Dan Penn and forward to Big Star. Follow any of those threads to keep travelling the influence between bands and genres on Starverb.

Background

The Box Tops are an American rock band formed in Memphis, Tennessee in 1967. They are best known for the hits "The Letter", "Cry Like a Baby", and "Soul Deep" and are considered a major blue-eyed soul group of the period. They performed a mixture of current soul music songs by artists such as James & Bobby Purify and Clifford Curry; pop tunes like "A Whiter Shade of Pale" by Procol Harum; and songs written by their producers, Dan Penn, Spooner Oldham, and Chips Moman. Vocalist Alex Chilton later fronted the power pop band Big Star and performed as a solo artist.
