The Blackbyrds is an act on the Starverb influence map. Their sound grew out of Merry Clayton and Donald Byrd. Those roots explain a lot about how The Blackbyrds arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Roy Ayers Ubiquity, Pleasure, Johnny Hammond, Lonnie Liston Smith & The Cosmic Echoes and Little Beaver, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Mac Dre, Heavy D, Nas, Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five and Tone-Lōc, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 44 connections around The Blackbyrds, reaching back through Merry Clayton and forward to Mac Dre. Follow any of those threads to keep travelling the influence between bands and genres on Starverb.
