The Drums is a Indie rock act. Their sound grew out of Joy Division, The Smiths, New Order, The Tough Alliance and The Shangri-Las. Those roots explain a lot about how The Drums arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Current Joys, Surf Curse, The Buttertones, Albert Hammond, Jr. and Hot Flash Heat Wave, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Dentist, Edwyn Collins, EKKSTACY, Surfer Blood and The Maccabees, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 49 connections around The Drums, reaching back through Joy Division and forward to Dentist.
