◇ image via WikipediaThe Smiths
The Smiths is a Indie rock act. Their sound grew out of Orange Juice, New Order, Junkie XL, Murray Head and Iggy Pop. Those roots explain a lot about how The Smiths arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Morrissey, The Cure, Talking Heads, Radiohead and Bauhaus, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Wild Beasts, Dolores O'Riordan, Panic! at the Disco, Fall Out Boy and Manic Street Preachers, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 168 connections around The Smiths, reaching back through Orange Juice and forward to Wild Beasts.
