Vanessa Carlton is an act on the Starverb influence map. Their sound grew out of Robyn, Joni Mitchell, Kimya Dawson, Stevie Nicks and Fleetwood Mac. Those roots explain a lot about how Vanessa Carlton arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Michelle Branch, Sara Bareilles, Jewel, KT Tunstall and Mandy Moore, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Royal Blood, Goo Goo Dolls, Third Eye Blind, Cam'ron and Deer Tick, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 51 connections around Vanessa Carlton, reaching back through Robyn and forward to Royal Blood. Follow any of those threads to keep travelling the influence between bands and genres on Starverb.
Background
Vanessa Lee Carlton is an American singer-songwriter, pianist, and actress. Her 2002 debut single "A Thousand Miles" spent 41 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 and earned three Grammy nominations, becoming her signature song. It preceded her debut album, Be Not Nobody, released by A&M Records that same year and reaching number five on the Billboard 200. It further produced the singles "Ordinary Day" and "Pretty Baby". Her next album, Harmonium (2004), experienced similar success; its troubled production led Carlton to depart A&M in 2005.
