Jewel is a Country and Folk act. Their catalogue also touches Pop. Their sound grew out of Omar Hakim, Meiko, Markus Schulz, Rob Thomas and Rolling in the Deep. Those roots explain a lot about how Jewel arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Sheryl Crow, Heather Nova, Michelle Branch, Sophie B. Hawkins and Jessica Simpson, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Pity Sex, Tracy Bonham, Holly Williams, Belly and Joan Franka, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 40 connections around Jewel, reaching back through Omar Hakim and forward to Pity Sex.
