Waxahatchee

Waxahatchee is an act on the Starverb influence map. Their sound grew out of Jason Molina, Good Morning, Magnolia Electric Co., Bedouine and Jess Williamson. Those roots explain a lot about how Waxahatchee arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Lucinda Williams, Ratboy, Sharon Van Etten, Kevin Morby and Jason Isbell, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Tegan and Sara, Sleater-Kinney, The New Pornographers, Jawbreaker and Bonny Doon, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 46 connections around Waxahatchee, reaching back through Jason Molina and forward to Tegan and Sara. Follow any of those threads to keep travelling the influence between bands and genres on Starverb.

Background

Waxahatchee is an American indie music project, formed in 2010 by American singer-songwriter Kathryn Crutchfield, known professionally as Katie Crutchfield, following the breakup of her previous band P.S. Eliot. The band is named after Waxahatchee Creek in Alabama, where Crutchfield grew up. Originally an acoustic solo project, her recordings now tend to involve a full backing band.
