Iron & Wine is a Country and Folk act. Their sound grew out of Brazos, The Postal Service, Nathaniel Rateliff & the Night Sweats, This Is the Kit and William Fitzsimmons. Those roots explain a lot about how Iron & Wine arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Andrew Bird, José González, The Tallest Man on Earth, Gregory Alan Isakov and Ray LaMontagne, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Jaymes Young, Searows, Great Lake Swimmers, S. Carey and Avi Kaplan, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 46 connections around Iron & Wine, reaching back through Brazos and forward to Jaymes Young.
