Ani DiFranco is an act on the Starverb influence map. Their sound grew out of Gillian Welch, Anaïs Mitchell, Pete Seeger, The Beatles and Mimi Fariña. Those roots explain a lot about how Ani DiFranco arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Indigo Girls, Liz Phair, Laura Veirs, Jewel and Beth Orton, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Frances Quinlan, Kiran Gandhi, Sharon Van Etten, Jay Brannan and Catherine Feeny, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 39 connections around Ani DiFranco, reaching back through Gillian Welch and forward to Frances Quinlan. Follow any of those threads to keep travelling the influence between bands and genres on Starverb.
