Zee Avi is a Indie rock act. Their sound grew out of The Carpenters, The Cranberries, Cat Power, Regina Spektor and Leonard Cohen. Those roots explain a lot about how Zee Avi arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Anya Marina, Pomplamoose, Eagle-Eye Cherry, Ingrid Michaelson and Jason Mraz, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Joni Mitchell, Michael Jackson, Bobby McFerrin, The Raconteurs and The White Stripes, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 35 connections around Zee Avi, reaching back through The Carpenters and forward to Joni Mitchell.
