Bar-Kays is a Funk act. Their sound grew out of Kashmere Stage Band, Sly Stone, The Temprees, Booker T. & the M.G.'s and Booker T. Jones. Those roots explain a lot about how Bar-Kays arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Con Funk Shun, Lakeside, Brick, Ohio Players and Slave, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Dazz Band, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 35 connections around Bar-Kays, reaching back through Kashmere Stage Band and forward to Dazz Band.
