Bossa nova

Chico Buarque is a Bossa nova act. Their sound grew out of Jair Rodrigues, Toquinho, Elza Soares, Tim Maia and Miúcha. Those roots explain a lot about how Chico Buarque arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Caetano Veloso, Milton Nascimento, Jorge Ben, Gilberto Gil and Nara Leão, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Elis Regina, Daniela Mercury, Brad Mehldau, Teresa Salgueiro and Celia Mara, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 42 connections around Chico Buarque, reaching back through Jair Rodrigues and forward to Elis Regina.
