◇ image via WikipediaJoão Gilberto
João Gilberto is a Bossa nova act. Their sound grew out of Carlos Lyra, Insensatez, Billy Blanco, Agostinho dos Santos and Samba de Uma Nota Só. Those roots explain a lot about how João Gilberto arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as João Donato, Baden Powell, Caetano Veloso, Nara Leão and Astrud Gilberto, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Liana Flores, Bossanova, Nara Leão, Walter Wanderley and YHLQMDLG, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 63 connections around João Gilberto, reaching back through Carlos Lyra and forward to Liana Flores.
