Luther Vandross is a Funk and House act. Their sound grew out of Will Downing, Peabo Bryson, Clive Davis, Teena Marie and Janet.. They run in the same orbit as L.T.D., Joe, Jeffrey Osborne, DeBarge and Gerald Levert, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Tevin Campbell, Amos Lee, Ruben Studdard, Jessica Sanchez and Thelma Houston, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation.
