Derek Trucks is a Blues act. Their sound grew out of Duane Allman, Howlin' Wolf, Miles Davis, Sun Ra and John Coltrane. Those roots explain a lot about how Derek Trucks arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Tedeschi Trucks Band, Susan Tedeschi, The Allman Brothers Band, The Wood Brothers and Widespread Panic, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Guthrie Govan, Vieux Farka Touré, Ayron Jones and Maya Delilah, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 47 connections around Derek Trucks, reaching back through Duane Allman and forward to Guthrie Govan.
