◇ image via WikipediaEurythmics
Eurythmics is an act on the Starverb influence map. Their sound grew out of Candy Dulfer, Manu Katché, Animotion, Holger Czukay and Clem Burke. Those roots explain a lot about how Eurythmics arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Annie Lennox, Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark, Erasure, Thompson Twins and a-ha, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Candy Dulfer, Abracadabra, Underworld, La Roux and Miss Kittin, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 64 connections around Eurythmics, reaching back through Candy Dulfer and forward to Candy Dulfer. Follow any of those threads to keep travelling the influence between bands and genres on Starverb.
Background
Eurythmics were a British new wave duo formed in 1980, consisting of the Scottish vocalist Annie Lennox and the English musician and producer Dave Stewart. They had both been previously in the Tourists, a band that broke up in 1980. They released their first studio album, In the Garden, in 1981 to little success, but achieved global acclaim with their second album, Sweet Dreams (1983). The title track became a worldwide hit, reaching number two in the UK Singles Chart, and number one in Canada and on the US Billboard Hot 100. Eurythmics went on to release a string of hit singles and albums, including "Love Is a Stranger", "There Must Be an Angel " and "Here Comes the Rain Again", before splitting in 1990.
