Gomez is a Indie rock act. Their sound grew out of Latin Playboys, The Beatles, John Lennon, The Band and Los Lobos. Those roots explain a lot about how Gomez arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Ocean Colour Scene, Doves, The Beta Band, I Am Kloot and Eels, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Wilco, Phantom Planet, Maroon 5, Pearl Jam and Dave Matthews Band, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 38 connections around Gomez, reaching back through Latin Playboys and forward to Wilco.
