Guru is an act on the Starverb influence map. Their sound grew out of magnom, Digable Planets, Bahamadia, M.O.P. and Les Nubians. Those roots explain a lot about how Guru arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Gang Starr, Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth, Brand Nubian, Digable Planets and Pete Rock, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Jeru the Damaja, Big L, Common Market, Chaka Khan and De La Soul, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 57 connections around Guru, reaching back through magnom and forward to Jeru the Damaja. Follow any of those threads to keep travelling the influence between bands and genres on Starverb.
