Gwen Guthrie is a House act. Their sound grew out of Sly and Robbie, Mtume, No Scrubs, Cutty Ranks and Aretha Franklin. Those roots explain a lot about how Gwen Guthrie arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Sharon Redd, Aurra, Shalamar, Skyy and Change, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Heather Small, Foxy Brown, Mýa, M People and Utah Saints, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 45 connections around Gwen Guthrie, reaching back through Sly and Robbie and forward to Heather Small.
