Jungle Brothers

Jungle Brothers is an act on the Starverb influence map. Their sound grew out of Propellerheads, 3 Feet High and Rising, The Todd Terry Project, A Tribe Called Quest and Jimmy "Bo" Horne. Those roots explain a lot about how Jungle Brothers arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Boogie Down Productions, De La Soul, 3rd Bass, EPMD and Eric B. & Rakim, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Stereo MCs, Propellerheads, MC Paul Barman, Tom Novy and Deee-Lite, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 45 connections around Jungle Brothers, reaching back through Propellerheads and forward to Stereo MCs. Follow any of those threads to keep travelling the influence between bands and genres on Starverb.

Background

Jungle Brothers are an American hip hop duo composed of Michael Small and Nathaniel Hall. Hailed as pioneers of the fusion of jazz, hip-hop, and house music, they were the first hip-hop group to collaborate with a house-music producer. The trio released their debut album, Straight out the Jungle, in July 1988. Their hip-house club hit single, "I'll House You" was added to the album in late-1988 reissues. Fostered by Kool DJ Red Alert, the Jungle Brothers' success influenced De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest, and eventually the Native Tongues collective that they founded.
