Blackalicious is an act on the Starverb influence map. Their sound grew out of Chali 2na, Imani Coppola, The Nextmen, Miho Hatori and DJ Shadow. Those roots explain a lot about how Blackalicious arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Hieroglyphics, People Under the Stairs, Jurassic 5, Lyrics Born and Dilated Peoples, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Ghemon, Kid A, Michael Franti, Saul Williams and Jaguar Wright, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 44 connections around Blackalicious, reaching back through Chali 2na and forward to Ghemon. Follow any of those threads to keep travelling the influence between bands and genres on Starverb.
