◇ image via WikipediaMavis Staples
Mavis Staples is a Blues and House act. Their catalogue also touches Rhythm and blues. Their sound grew out of Brittany Howard, Lucky Peterson, The Staple Singers, Thelma Houston and M. Ward. Those roots explain a lot about how Mavis Staples arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Robert Finley, Curtis Harding, Irma Thomas, The James Hunter Six and Say She She, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Dr. John, Johnny Paycheck, Keb' Mo', Valerie June and Eric Bibb, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 76 connections around Mavis Staples, reaching back through Brittany Howard and forward to Dr. John.
