MC Lars

MC Lars is an act on the Starverb influence map. Their sound grew out of Dead Milkmen, The Dead Milkmen, Suburban Legends, Grieves and K.Flay. Those roots explain a lot about how MC Lars arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as MC Frontalot, MC Chris, Beefy, Optimus Rhyme and Flobots, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into K.Flay, Weerd Science and Mega Ran, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 39 connections around MC Lars, reaching back through Dead Milkmen and forward to K.Flay. Follow any of those threads to keep travelling the influence between bands and genres on Starverb.

Background

Andrew Robert Nielsen, known professionally as MC Lars, is an American rapper, producer, educator, and founder of Horris Records. A graduate of Stanford University and the University of Oxford, he has been described as a pioneer of "lit-hop", a genre blending hip-hop with themes from classical and American literature. In a 2003 song, he used the term "iGeneration", which ASCAP credited as an early instance of the term. He has performed at venues including Carnegie Hall and multiple TEDx events. His work frequently references authors like William Shakespeare, Edgar Allan Poe, and Herman Melville, and he is considered a key figure in the early nerdcore movement.
