Otis Spann is a Blues act. Their sound grew out of Big Maceo Merriweather, Memphis Minnie, Bessie Smith, Little Brother Montgomery and Victoria Spivey. Those roots explain a lot about how Otis Spann arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Pinetop Perkins, Little Walter, Slim Harpo, Roosevelt Sykes and John Lee Hooker, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Pinetop Perkins, Tracy Nelson, Fleetwood Mac, Peter Green and Robert Lockwood Jr., where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 26 connections around Otis Spann, reaching back through Big Maceo Merriweather and forward to Pinetop Perkins.
