Sly & Robbie is an act on the Starverb influence map. Their sound grew out of Lloyd Knibb. Those roots explain a lot about how Sly & Robbie arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Sound Dimension, Prince Jammy, King Tubby, Scientist and The Aggrovators, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Rayvon, Shaggy, Shabba Ranks, Maxi Priest and Robbie Williams, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 32 connections around Sly & Robbie, reaching back through Lloyd Knibb and forward to Rayvon. Follow any of those threads to keep travelling the influence between bands and genres on Starverb.
Background
Sly and Robbie were a prolific Jamaican rhythm section and production duo, associated primarily with the reggae and dub genres. Drummer Sly Dunbar and bassist Robbie Shakespeare teamed up in the mid-1970s after establishing themselves separately in Jamaica as professional musicians. They recorded several albums under the Sly and Robbie name, and made hundreds of appearances on records by other performers.
