The Beat is an act on the Starverb influence map. Their sound grew out of Higher Intelligence Agency, Jerry Dammers, The Specials, Prince Buster and The Pioneers. Those roots explain a lot about how The Beat arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as The Selecter, Bad Manners, Madness, The Jam and The Undertones, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into The Toasters, Pato Banton, Jonny Greenwood, 21st Century Breakdown and Fine Young Cannibals, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 32 connections around The Beat, reaching back through Higher Intelligence Agency and forward to The Toasters. Follow any of those threads to keep travelling the influence between bands and genres on Starverb.
