Big Star is a Dance-pop act. Their sound grew out of The Beatles, The Byrds, Simon & Garfunkel, John Lennon and Paul McCartney. Those roots explain a lot about how Big Star arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Alex Chilton, Teenage Fanclub, The Raspberries, Badfinger and Flamin' Groovies, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Afghan Whigs, Xiu Xiu, Cheap Trick, White Blood Cells and A Little Bit Longer, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 47 connections around Big Star, reaching back through The Beatles and forward to Afghan Whigs. Follow any of those threads to keep travelling the influence between bands and genres on Starverb.
