◇ image via WikipediaMos Def
Mos Def is an act on the Starverb influence map. Their sound grew out of Bernie Worrell, The Roots, Mahavishnu Orchestra, The Ecleftic: 2 Sides II a Book and Lucas. Those roots explain a lot about how Mos Def arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Black Star, Talib Kweli, The Roots, A Tribe Called Quest and Common, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Charlie Wilson, Emicida, Common, Pharoahe Monch and Nate Dogg, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 105 connections around Mos Def, reaching back through Bernie Worrell and forward to Charlie Wilson. Follow any of those threads to keep travelling the influence between bands and genres on Starverb.
