The Edwin Hawkins Singers

The Edwin Hawkins Singers is an act on the Starverb influence map. Their sound grew out of Johnny Harris. Barrett and The Youth for Christ Choir, Mahalia Jackson, Tasha Cobbs Leonard and Sister Rosetta Tharpe, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into LaShun Pace, Tramaine Hawkins, The Four Seasons and Melanie, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 25 connections around The Edwin Hawkins Singers, reaching back through Johnny Harris and forward to LaShun Pace. Background

Edwin Reuben Hawkins was an American gospel musician, pianist, vocalist, choir master, composer, and arranger. He was one of the originators of the urban contemporary gospel sound. As the leader of the Edwin Hawkins Singers, he was probably best known for his 1968 arrangement of "Oh Happy Day", which was included on the "Songs of the Century" list. In 1970, the Edwin Hawkins Singers made a second foray into the charts, backing folk singer Melanie on "Lay Down ".
