The Fray is a Rap act. Their sound grew out of Augustana, Carolina Liar, Nathaniel Rateliff & the Night Sweats, Tonic and Mutemath. Those roots explain a lot about how The Fray arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Augustana, Five for Fighting, The Script, Snow Patrol and The Calling, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Donnie Klang, Donnie, Kris Allen, Julia Michaels and Andy Grammer, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 52 connections around The Fray, reaching back through Augustana and forward to Donnie Klang.
