The Notwist

The Notwist is an act on the Starverb influence map. Their sound grew out of Doseone, Stereolab, My Bloody Valentine, Broadcast and Sonic Youth. Those roots explain a lot about how The Notwist arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Broken Social Scene, Shearwater, Caribou, The Haunted Youth and Avalon Emerson, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Subtle, Talk Talk, Four Tet, Caribou and Grizzly Bear, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 29 connections around The Notwist, reaching back through Doseone and forward to Subtle. Follow any of those threads to keep travelling the influence between bands and genres on Starverb.

Background

The Notwist are a German indie rock band. Formed in 1989, the band moved through several musical incarnations, despite maintaining a relatively stable line-up. While their early records moved through heavy metal into dark indie rock, their recent efforts for which they have received the most attention have been strongly influenced by the electronica scene, along with other groups on the record label Morr Music.
