◇ image via WikipediaVillage People
Village People is a Disco act. Their sound grew out of Ritchie Family, Patrick Juvet, Odyssey, Jacques Morali and Royal Gigolos. Those roots explain a lot about how Village People arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Patrick Hernandez, Gloria Gaynor, Boney M., Ottawan and The Weather Girls, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Toto, Mr. Mister, Chris Lowe, Skatt Bros and Hot to Go!, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 43 connections around Village People, reaching back through Ritchie Family and forward to Toto.
