Steve Lacy is an act on the Starverb influence map. Their sound grew out of Mac DeMarco, Wynter Gordon, Fousheé, Jesse Boykins III and J*DaVeY. Those roots explain a lot about how Steve Lacy arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as The Internet, Matt Martians, Frank Ocean, Syd and Jordan Ward, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Frank Ocean, Tyler, The Creator, Solange Knowles, Kendrick Lamar and Vampire Weekend, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 69 connections around Steve Lacy, reaching back through Mac DeMarco and forward to Frank Ocean. Follow any of those threads to keep travelling the influence between bands and genres on Starverb.
Background
Steve Thomas Lacy-Moya is an American singer-songwriter, guitarist and record producer. He gained recognition as the guitarist of the alternative R&B band the Internet, which he joined in 2015. His self-produced debut EP, Steve Lacy's Demo (2017), was met with critical praise and became a sleeper hit. Lacy then guest performed alongside Frank Ocean on Tyler, the Creator's 2017 single "911 / Mr. Lonely", which received double platinum certification by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). That year, he also co-wrote songs for artists including Solange Knowles, and Kendrick Lamar on his song "Pride".
