Phil Carney would later replace Gorden Mack as the band's guitarist. He did not reach a wide audience during his lifetime, but found acclaim and wider recognition following his death.

Although the group broke up in 1994 shortly after the release of The White Birch, their subdued and melancholic style helped pioneer the then-nascent slowcore subgenre of indie rock. Codeine has since reunited on two occasions: the first for a handful of shows in 2012, and a second time for a series of shows in New York City and Los Angeles in 2023.
