999 is a Punk rock act. Their sound grew out of The Clash. Those roots explain a lot about how 999 arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Sham 69, Chelsea, The Adverts, Stiff Little Fingers and The Rezillos, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Nine Inch Nails, Darryl Jenifer, The Dillinger Escape Plan, Sarah Jezebel Deva and The Jam, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 33 connections around 999, reaching back through The Clash and forward to Nine Inch Nails.
