Arthur Russell is a Disco act. Their sound grew out of Deee-Lite, The Modern Lovers, Talking Heads, David Byrne and Jerry Harrison. Those roots explain a lot about how Arthur Russell arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Dinosaur L, ML Buch, Jim O'Rourke, Julia Holter and John Cale, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Ants from Up There, El Mal Querer, Tom Odell, Peter Broderick and Nourished by Time, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 32 connections around Arthur Russell, reaching back through Deee-Lite and forward to Ants from Up There. Background
Charles Arthur Russell Jr. was an American cellist, composer, producer, singer, and musician from Iowa, whose work spanned a disparate range of styles. After studying contemporary composition and Indian classical music in California, Russell relocated to New York City in the mid-1970s, where he became involved in Lower Manhattan's avant-garde community and later the city's burgeoning disco scene. His eclectic music was often marked by adventurous production choices and his soft tenor vocals.
