Talking Heads is an act on the Starverb influence map. Their sound grew out of Parliament-Funkadelic, Fela Kuti, The Sonics, The Who and Al Green. Those roots explain a lot about how Talking Heads arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Oingo Boingo, Wire, Elvis Costello & The Attractions, The Cure and The Smiths, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into INXS, How to Disappear Completely, The Brobecks, Loose Joints and The Automatic, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 125 connections around Talking Heads, reaching back through Parliament-Funkadelic and forward to INXS. Follow any of those threads to keep travelling the influence between bands and genres on Starverb.
Background
Talking Heads were an American rock band formed in New York City in 1975. It consisted of lead vocalist and guitarist David Byrne, drummer Chris Frantz, bassist Tina Weymouth, and guitarist and keyboardist Jerry Harrison. Described as one of the most acclaimed groups of the 1970s and 1980s, Talking Heads helped to pioneer new wave music by combining elements of punk, art rock, funk, and world music with "an anxious yet clean-cut image".
