Fishbone is an act on the Starverb influence map. Their sound grew out of Tool, Bad Brains, Perry Farrell, Flogging Molly and Dallas Austin. Those roots explain a lot about how Fishbone arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Infectious Grooves, Catch 22, The Suicide Machines, Less Than Jake and Hepcat, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Amp Fiddler, Robi Draco Rosa, Urban Dance Squad, Gabriel Teodros and Tool, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 58 connections around Fishbone, reaching back through Tool and forward to Amp Fiddler. Follow any of those threads to keep travelling the influence between bands and genres on Starverb.
Background
Fishbone is an American rock band from Los Angeles, California. Formed in 1979, the band plays a fusion of ska, punk, funk, metal, reggae, and soul. AllMusic has described the group as "one of the most distinctive and eclectic alternative rock bands of the late 1980s. With their hyperactive, self-conscious diversity, goofy sense of humor, and sharp social commentary, the group gained a sizable cult following".
