Gojira

Gojira is an act on the Starverb influence map. Their sound grew out of Apocalyptica, Alien Weaponry, Comeback Kid, Textures and Metallica. Those roots explain a lot about how Gojira arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Meshuggah, Tool, Death, Jinjer and Haken, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Eths, Machine Head, Jinjer, Stray from the Path and Cannibal Corpse, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 49 connections around Gojira, reaching back through Apocalyptica and forward to Eths. Follow any of those threads to keep travelling the influence between bands and genres on Starverb.

Background

Gojira is a French heavy metal band from Ondres. Founded as Godzilla in 1996, the band's lineup – brothers Joe and Mario Duplantier (drums), Christian Andreu (guitar), and Jean-Michel Labadie (bass) – has been the same since the band changed its name to Gojira in 2001. Gojira has been known for its progressive and technical death metal styles and lyrics that often feature themes of spirituality, philosophy, and environmentalism. The band has gone "from the utmost obscurity during the first half of their career to widespread global recognition in the second".
