J Mascis is an act on the Starverb influence map. Their sound grew out of The Stooges, Hanin Elias, Wipers, Mike Watt and Ron Asheton. Those roots explain a lot about how J Mascis arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Dinosaur Jr., Stephen Malkmus, Bob Mould, The Lemonheads and Superchunk, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into I Was A King, The Dandy Warhols, Buffalo Tom, Kurt Cobain and Kevin Shields, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 48 connections around J Mascis, reaching back through The Stooges and forward to I Was A King. Follow any of those threads to keep travelling the influence between bands and genres on Starverb.
