Kid Cudi is an act on the Starverb influence map. Their sound grew out of Climbing to New Lows, The Pharcyde, A Tribe Called Quest, Kenna and Menahan Street Band. Those roots explain a lot about how Kid Cudi arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as KIDS SEE GHOSTS, Childish Gambino, A$AP Rocky, Pusha T and ScHoolboy Q, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Eminem, Pi'erre Bourne, Travi$ Scott, Kanye West and Asher Roth, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 106 connections around Kid Cudi, reaching back through Climbing to New Lows and forward to Eminem. Follow any of those threads to keep travelling the influence between bands and genres on Starverb.
Background
Scott Ramon Seguro Mescudi, also known by his stage name Kid Cudi, is an American rapper, singer, songwriter, record producer, actor, and fashion designer. Born and raised in Cleveland, Cudi moved to New York City in pursuit of a musical career, where he first gained recognition for his song "Day 'n' Nite". Initially self-published on his MySpace page, the song became a hit online and served as a catalyst for Cudi to team up with record producers Plain Pat and Emile Haynie to record his first full-length project, a mixtape titled A Kid Named Cudi (2008). Its release helped Cudi rise to prominence and establish a fanbase, catching the attention of rapper Kanye West—who signed Cudi to his GOOD Music label by late 2008.
