St. Vincent is an act on the Starverb influence map. Their sound grew out of Pixies, Ritchie Valens, Nick Cave, Kate Bush and David Bowie. Those roots explain a lot about how St. Vincent arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as PJ Harvey, Perfume Genius, Haim, Sharon Van Etten and Florence + the Machine, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings, Nova Twins, Baby Queen, Violet Grohl and Olivia Rodrigo, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 60 connections around St. Vincent, reaching back through Pixies and forward to Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings. Follow any of those threads to keep travelling the influence between bands and genres on Starverb.
