◇ image via WikipediaMadlib
Madlib is a Hip hop act. Their sound grew out of David Axelrod, George Benson, Cedar Walton, Herbie Hancock and Gene Harris. Those roots explain a lot about how Madlib arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Yesterday's New Quintet, J Dilla, Lootpack, Karriem Riggins and Knxwledge, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Lone, MF DOOM, Freddie Gibbs, Talib Kweli and Erykah Badu, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 99 connections around Madlib, reaching back through David Axelrod and forward to Lone. Follow any of those threads to keep travelling the influence between bands and genres on Starverb.
