Punk rock

Magazine is a Punk rock act. Their sound grew out of A Certain Ratio, Buzzcocks, Visage, Ultravox and John Foxx. Those roots explain a lot about how Magazine arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Wire, Buzzcocks, Public Image Ltd., Au Pairs and Josef K, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Manic Street Preachers, Pulp, Pond, John Frusciante and MGMT, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 47 connections around Magazine, reaching back through A Certain Ratio and forward to Manic Street Preachers. Follow any of those threads to keep travelling the influence between bands and genres on Starverb.
