◇ image via WikipediaSimple Minds
Simple Minds is a Synth-pop act. Their sound grew out of Joe Strummer and the Mescaleros, Midge Ure, Steve Hillage, Arrested Development and Ewan MacColl. Those roots explain a lot about how Simple Minds arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Ultravox, Eurythmics, Tears for Fears, Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark and ABC, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Smash Mouth, Republica, Big Country, So High School and Slow, Deep and Hard, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 71 connections around Simple Minds, reaching back through Joe Strummer and the Mescaleros and forward to Smash Mouth.
